Part 2 of 3 – Checklist for a Successful PreK-3 Literacy Program
In my last post I told you about the key attributes to look for to ensure any reading program is designed with the learning reader in mind.
The second key question we ask, is whether the program is Teacher Focused – as in made by a teacher, and made for the teacher. Many reading programs are designed by publishers with no experience of the primary classroom.
Here’s how you can tell when a teacher is in charge of the publishing, not the other way round (also known as the tail wagging the dog!):
- Look for programs with built-in teaching support – keywords, word counts, learning objectives
- Ready-made extension activities to provide additional learning opportunities contained within every title
- Choose books authored by reading specialists who have hands-on experience in teaching children to read.
Our Red Rocket Readers series checks each of these boxes, resulting in an award winning collection of highly quality leveled texts, ideal for Guided Reading, Reading Recovery, ELL and Special Needs applications.
