Teaching the Teacher at Texas A&M University

Sarah EnsorProfessional Development, News

Recently we began working with Dr. Bethanie Pletcher and Texas A&M University Corpus Christi to improve the quality of the teaching resources being used in teacher training. As a result, student teachers studying the Diagnosis and Correction of Reading Problems will now have access to a fully-stocked library of Red Rocket Readers.

We love seeing the Red Rocket Readers series poster on the wall and the book bins full of our lovely books – almost as much as we love knowing that the books are being used by a dedicated team of educators as they embark on a research project to measure and improve literacy outcomes for children via small group reading instruction. We look forward to hearing the results of that work in due course.

Dr. Pletcher taught in the elementary school for twelve years, including eight years as a Literacy Coach, Reading Specialist, and Reading Recovery© teacher. She received an Ed.D. in Reading, Language Arts, and Literature Education at the University of Houston and an M.Ed. in Reading Education at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Pletcher is the Undergraduate Reading Program Coordinator.

Dr. Pletcher’s research interests include teacher and student discourse during reading instruction, early literacy, and literacy coaching. She presents workshop sessions at national, regional, and state conferences, serves as a consultant in local schools, and is a co-editor for the Texas Journal of Literacy Education.
